The Velotric Tempo is a lightweight, bike-first electric bicycle designed for riders who want useful electric assistance without the bulk, weight, or oversized appearance of many conventional e-bikes. At approximately 39 pounds—and about 34 pounds with the removable battery taken out—it is comparatively easy to handle, transport, park, and pedal without assistance. Its responsive hub motor, selectable torque- or cadence-sensing pedal assist, hydraulic disc brakes, gravel-capable tires, integrated lighting, and fitness-oriented Pulse Mode make it well suited to neighborhood riding, errands, paved paths, rail trails, commuting, and active recreational cycling.

Best For

  • Riders who want a lighter and more manageable e-bike
  • Cyclists transitioning from a traditional bicycle to electric assistance
  • Neighborhood riding, commuting, errands, bike paths, and rail trails
  • Riders who still want meaningful exercise while receiving help on hills or into headwinds
  • Customers who prefer a clean, understated bicycle appearance
  • Riders who may need to lift or transport the bicycle more frequently than a heavier e-bike

Why We Like It at Kickstand Culture

The Tempo fills an important place in the e-bike market. Many riders do not need a heavy fat-tire bike, cargo platform, or high-powered utility model. They want something that still feels like a bicycle, remains enjoyable to pedal without motor support, and is easier to live with day to day. At 39 pounds, the Tempo is substantially lighter than most full-size e-bikes while still offering enough assistance for hills, longer rides, and everyday transportation.

Velotric also gives the Tempo more flexibility than its minimalist appearance suggests. SensorSwap allows the rider to choose between torque-sensor assistance, which responds naturally to pedaling effort, and cadence-sensor assistance, which provides steadier support with less rider effort. Shimano hydraulic brakes, an 8-speed drivetrain, 700×42c puncture-resistant tires, integrated lighting, NFC access, phone-location compatibility, and a removable battery make it a capable everyday bicycle rather than merely a lightweight specialty model.

Pulse Mode is especially distinctive. When paired with the included heart-rate armband or a compatible heart-rate-broadcasting smartwatch, the bike can automatically adjust assistance to help the rider remain near a selected effort level. That makes the Tempo particularly appealing to riders who want an e-bike that supports active cycling rather than simply minimizing effort.

Why Choose the Tempo?

Choose the Tempo if low weight, bicycle-like handling, easy transport, and active pedaling are more important to you than maximum motor power, suspension, or cargo capacity. It is an excellent choice for a rider who still enjoys the feel of a conventional bicycle but wants assistance for hills, wind, longer distances, or days when less effort is appropriate.

The Aventon Soltera 3 ADV is another lightweight urban option and may appeal to riders who prefer its belt-drive system and different frame design. The Velotric Breeze 1 may be the better choice for riders who want a more upright step-through cruiser with greater motor output and a larger battery. The Tempo is the strongest fit when low weight, traditional-bicycle feel, selectable sensor response, and fitness-oriented features are the priorities.

Pulse Mode note: Pulse Mode adjusts assistance using real-time heart-rate information from the included armband or a compatible heart-rate-broadcasting smartwatch. It is intended as a riding and fitness-support feature, not as a medical monitoring or diagnostic device. Riders with cardiovascular concerns or physician-imposed exercise limits should follow their clinician’s guidance rather than relying solely on the bicycle’s heart-rate function.

SensorSwap note: Torque-sensor mode responds directly to rider effort and generally feels more like a conventional bicycle. Cadence-sensor mode provides steadier assistance once pedal rotation is detected and may be preferable for longer, easier cruising.

Rigid-fork note: The Tempo does not have front suspension. Its rigid fork contributes to low weight, efficiency, and precise handling, but riders seeking greater cushioning on rough pavement may prefer the Breeze 1 or another suspension-equipped model.

Class-setting note: E-bike classifications, throttle use, and permitted speeds vary by roadway, path, park, and jurisdiction. Velotric states that the Tempo does not support throttle unlocking in Class 3 configuration. Configure and operate the bicycle appropriately for where it will be ridden.

Range note: Actual range varies with assistance mode, throttle use, rider weight, terrain, wind, temperature, tire pressure, riding speed, stop frequency, and heart-rate-based assistance behavior. The published maximum ranges reflect favorable test conditions.

Transport note: The Tempo’s low weight makes it easier to carry and transport than many e-bikes, but the bicycle rack must still be rated for its weight, wheelbase, tire size, and frame configuration. Removing the battery lowers lifting weight but does not replace the need for a properly rated rack.

Connected-features note: Pulse Mode, NFC access, Apple Find My, Android Find Hub, Bluetooth functions, Ride Tuning, and over-the-air updates may require compatible devices, account setup, current software, and data connectivity.
